My son and daughter are nuts about science, space and engineering. Because of that, I was looking for something that every Blerd kid would love. That’s when I stumbled upon a website that sold some really cool NASA gear for kids. They had some neat stuff. If you are looking for some cool NASA gear, check out the NASA hoodies by Design Tribe! Design Tribe has a ton of really neat NASA apparel.
NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. In case you weren’t aware, NASA is a U.S. government agency that is responsible for science and technology related to air and space. The Space Age started in 1957 with the launch of the Soviet satellite Sputnik, shortly after Sputnik, the space race began. The Soviet Union was able to get the first man in space. The first man in space, Yuri Gagarin had his monumental flight, on April 12, 1961. Gagarin’s flight lasted 108 minutes as he circled the Earth for a little more than one orbit in the Soviet Union’s Vostok spacecraft.
Blerd’s and NASA History
In 1961, mathematician Katherine Goble was hires as a human computer, also known as a “computress” in the West Area Computers division of the Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, alongside her colleagues, aspiring engineer Mary Jackson and their unofficial acting-supervisor Dorothy Vaughan. They are all African American women their unit is segregated by race and sex. Their NASA experience was documented in the docudrama, Hidden Figures. An excellent movie.
